Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace (1815–1852), daughter of the poet Byron and the mathematically formidable Annabella Milbanke, saw further into the computing age than anyone alive — including Charles Babbage, whose Analytical Engine she described in notes containing what is now considered the first published algorithm, and the first argument that such a machine might compose music and manipulate symbols, not merely numbers.
