ICMR licenses three indigenous technologies for cancer, infections
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has licensed three indigenous biomedical technologies to domestic pharma and vaccine manufacturers to accelerate the translation of publicly funded research into affordable healthcare, underlining India's push for self-reliant innovation. The line-up includes SHetA2, a first-in-class anti-HPV therapy for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, licensed to Emcure Pharmaceuticals, and two next-generation vaccine technologies against enteric bacteria developed by ICMR’s NIRBI, licensed to Biological E Ltd. The SHetA2 program was a collaborative effort involving ICMR-NICPR and US partner Doris Benbrook, aiming to selectively target HPV-induced precancerous and cancerous cells while preserving healthy tissue, potentially offering a safe and minimally invasive treatment for cervical cancer. The enteric vaccine technologies feature a Salmonella typhi outer membrane protein fusion construct as a promising typhoid vaccine candidate and a recombinant vaccine composition aimed at broader protection against Salmonella typhi, paratyphi, and Shigella infections, designed to strengthen infectious disease control. These transfers are framed as part of broader efforts like the Medical Innovations Patent Mitra initiative to bring research closer to patient care and to foster partnerships between researchers, industry, and healthcare institutions for a more self-reliant healthcare ecosystem.
