Phoolan to premiere at TIFF 2026
Richie Mehta’s Phoolan, a Prime Video original about Phoolan Devi, has been selected for the Special Presentations program at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival in 2026, with a Sept. 16 screening at the Princess of Wales Theatre. The film, produced by Namah Pictures, focuses on a defining 48-hour siege in which thousands of armed men hunted Devi, inspired by I, Phoolan: The Autobiography of India’s Bandit Queen. Sneha Kumari leads the cast as Phoolan, alongside Anurag Thakur, Vikram Pratap Singh, Aakash Dahiya, Prateek Pachori and Dev Dutt Budholiya. After TIFF, Phoolan is slated to premiere on Prime Video, with no general release date yet announced. The project marks Mehta’s continued festival presence, decades after his prior work screened at TIFF in 2016. The ensemble and historical lens place Phoolan Devi’s story at the center of contemporary cinema’s exploration of myth, memory, and gendered violence.
