A 33-year-old man, Stephen T. Scazzafavo, was arrested in Portland after assaulting a work crew and later threatening officers. Around 2:30 p.m. near Northeast Brazee Street and 122nd Avenue, officers located him and attempted to take him into custody. He allegedly threw a knife at officers, which struck and damaged a patrol vehicle windshield but did not injure any officer. He fled on foot and continued to threaten officers with a metal hiking stick and a flashlight that functions as a stun gun; he was eventually restrained. Investigators say before police arrived, he attacked a work crew, struck a worker with a bike pump, and damaged the crew's vehicle, causing thousands of dollars in damage, though no workers were hurt. He was booked on multiple charges including first-degree criminal mischief, harassment, attempted fourth- and second-degree assault, menacing, unlawful use of an electrical stun gun, tear gas or mace, unlawful use of a weapon, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, and three counts of attempted assault on a police officer, with Chief Day praising officers for the quick and controlled response.
