Google’s Nuvem subsea cable connects Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to Sines, Portugal, spanning about 7,000 kilometers through Bermuda and the Azores with a design capacity of 384 terabits per second, bolstering a new U.S.–Europe data route as demand for cloud and AI services grows. The project positions Portugal as the Atlantic gateway of Europe, expanding its role as a hub for intercontinental data traffic, AI-driven data centers, and renewable-energy-powered infrastructure. Portugal already links to the world via the Equiano and EllaLink cables, underscoring its strategic position in global connectivity and digital resilience. The Nuvem initiative is part of broader efforts to attract AI infrastructure investment, including Microsoft’s involvement in the Sines-based Start Campus project, and to leverage Portugal’s abundant renewable energy resources. Together, these developments reinforce Europe’s digital sovereignty by strengthening essential network backbones that carry the majority of global data traffic.
