Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative by Galaxy Digital
Galaxy Digital launched the Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative, pledging up to $5 million in developer grants, plus a Galaxy Research program and a Quantum Advisory Council. The inaugural Quantum Advisory Council includes Barry Sanders, Damien Bérubé, and Eran Tromer. The program aims to harden Bitcoin against quantum threats, specifically the risk of Q-Day when quantum computers could derive private keys from public keys and siphon funds. Defenses discussed include migrating to quantum-resistant addresses and adopting new signature schemes, though widespread implementation faces governance hurdles. Galaxy founder Mike Novogratz said the initiative provides practical steps to research, fund, and support Bitcoin’s security, noting regulatory and standards milestones like NIST's 2024 post-quantum standards and a 2031 federal deployment deadline. The push comes amid rising industry urgency, with Coinbase and others highlighting the need to begin migration as quantum risks accelerate.
