Torres Returns To Tigers Lineup Ahead Deadline
The Detroit Tigers activated Gleyber Torres from the 10-day injured list ahead of a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs, returning after about a month sidelined by an oblique strain. Torres started at second base and batted second in his first major league game since June 15, with Detroit hoping his return strengthens the top of the order. Eduardo Valencia was optioned to Triple-A Toledo to clear a roster spot, as Torres’ comeback fills a keystone role and Valencia had produced in limited action. Manager A.J. Hinch said the team is a different club with Torres back and stressed ignoring the noise as the Tigers push toward the Aug. 3 trade deadline. Torres had been hitting .280 with four homers and 18 RBIs in 43 games this season, and his return provides veteran depth after previous oblique injuries. The Tigers are now evaluating how Torres fits into the lineup down the stretch and whether additional help is needed before the deadline to capitalize on his return.
