AARP survey shows aging-in-place demand rising
As the 36th anniversary of the ADA approaches, advocates are turning attention to the home, a space not previously regulated by the law. AARP's 2024 Home and Community Preferences Survey shows three-quarters of adults 50 and older want to stay in their current home, with 73% wishing to remain in their community. The survey also finds that nearly two-thirds expect to need a medical alert system to live independently, and many anticipate needing smart home security features and home modifications such as grab bars, ramps, and wider doorways. Rodney Harrell of AARP notes that rising housing costs and limited options create barriers to aging in place, alongside ongoing concerns about affordable housing stock and accessible design. The articles collectively highlight a shift in the discussion from staying in place to what tools and home designs will support long-term independence. Falls remain the leading cause of injury, underscoring the importance of accessible features in residence.
