Athletics Gain New Investors Ahead of Las Vegas Move
The Oakland Athletics’ planned move to Las Vegas for the 2028 season is progressing, with a new $2 billion domed ballpark on the Las Vegas Strip targeted to open on Opening Day 2028. Financing for the project has been a major question, but Harbinger Sports Partners—led by Mark Cuban and Rashaun Williams—has purchased a minority stake to bolster funding and credibility for the $550 million to $550 million-plus financing effort, joining other investors like Aramark and Team 61. Harbinger’s involvement brings high-profile sports, media, and entertainment experience to the ownership group, and its principals include former MLB CFO Jonathan Mariner and Falcons executive Steve Cannon. While the precise ownership percentage remains undisclosed, the deal marks Cuban’s first foray into MLB ownership as part of Harbinger, expanding his sports portfolio beyond the Mavericks and other ventures. The team continues to operate during construction in West Sacramento and is banking on a broader Las Vegas transformation to support long-term value for the franchise. Industry observers note the A’s valuation sits in the middle third of MLB teams, with the move intended to unlock new revenue streams amid evolving league economics.
