Brazil approves 40-hour week, ends six-day schedules
Brazil’s Congress has approved a constitutional amendment that will phase out the traditional six-day workweek and reduce the maximum workweek from 44 hours to 40, without cutting salaries. The transition is scheduled to begin with a 42-hour limit after 60 days, followed by a 40-hour limit after 14 months; most workers are expected to have five workdays and two paid rest days. The change could affect up to 30 million workers, particularly in retail, hospitality and food service, while employers may need to revise staffing and work schedules. Supporters say the reform will give workers more time to rest and care for their families, while business groups have raised concerns about possible costs and employment effects.
