DoorDash Agrees to $17 Billion Instacart Deal
DoorDash has agreed to acquire Instacart, formally Maplebear, in a cash-and-stock deal valued at about $17 billion. DoorDash will pay $65 per share, a 26% premium to the cited Oct. 22 closing price, with at least 75% of the consideration in cash; Instacart’s board approved the deal. The companies say Instacart shoppers will gain access to more than 50,000 additional stores, while DashPass and Instacart+ members will share one membership fee. Instacart’s brand and technology are expected to remain, and the businesses will operate separately until closing. The deal combines DoorDash’s delivery network with Instacart’s grocery expertise as both seek growth beyond restaurant delivery and face competition from Walmart and Amazon, along with cost pressures and slowing growth.
