Boy Harsher have announced GET MEAN, their major-label debut on Atlantic, due September 18 with the leading single and video for “Hard Beat.” The twelve-track set channels grief, loss, and survival as the duo—Jae Matthews and Augustus Muller—document a painful personal period and emerge with a redemption-focused arc, aided by recording across eight locations in the U.S., Mexico, and Italy. The “Hard Beat” video, self-directed, portrays surveillance, deviance, and trauma in a Gregg Araki/Helmut Newton-inspired visual, continuing the band’s noir-influenced aesthetic. This release marks their first full-length since The Runner (2022) and follows a high-profile breakup between Matthews and Muller in early 2024, which shaped the album’s direction. In addition to the album, Boy Harsher have mapped out a North American tour to accompany GET MEAN’s rollout. Critics and press have highlighted the duo’s evolution toward darker electronic textures and a broader sonic palette, including detuned pads and new guitar inflections, while maintaining their minimalist, danceable core.
