Democratic Socialist Janeese Lewis George Elected D.C. Mayor
Democratic socialist Janeese Lewis George has won Washington, D.C.’s mayoral election after securing the Democratic primary, where she defeated former council member Kenyan McDuffie, and is set to succeed retiring Mayor Muriel Bowser. She joins a small but growing group of democratic socialist mayors, including New York’s Zohran Mamdani and Seattle’s Katie Wilson. Lewis George has emphasized affordability, affordable housing and child care, and has pledged to work with the federal government while standing up to President Donald Trump, whose threats to intervene in city affairs have heightened tensions over D.C.’s autonomy. She also wants to scale back cooperation with Trump’s public-safety task force, including joint operations and the National Guard’s presence; Trump officials and conservative experts credit the collaboration with helping reduce crime, while critics view it as federal overreach.
