Ehlers’ Winner Gives Hurricanes Seventh Straight Win
Nikolaj Ehlers scored a power-play goal 6:43 into the third period to lift the Carolina Hurricanes past the Winnipeg Jets 3-2, extending Carolina's winning streak to seven games. The Hurricanes are 7-1-1 on the season. Before the game, on his second return to Winnipeg, Ehlers said, "It still feels weird," and that he never got to thank the city and fans for his last game there. "So, I love coming back here," he said. Winnipeg led 1-0 on Mark Scheifele's backhander after an Ehlers turnover and 2-1 on Alex Iafallo's goal after Pyotr Kochetkov mishandled the puck. Mark Jankowski tied the game on the power play, and Jesperi Kotkaniemi tied it late in the second with a tip-in of a Shayne Gostisbehere shot, his first goal in 36 games. Carolina finished 2-for-2 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill. Kochetkov stopped 21 of 23 shots for his fifth straight win and is 5-0-0 with a 1.78 goals-against average. Carolina was without Jordan Staal, Taylor Hall, and Seth Jarvis, and Bradly Nadeau and Felix Unger Sörum made their season debuts. A wire summary said Jankowski extended his goal streak to seven games; other accounts said it was his sixth goal in six straight games, tying the franchise record since the 1997 relocation.
