Exomoon Candidate Reported Orbiting Brown Dwarf CD-35 2722
Astronomers using the Very Large Telescope have gathered the strongest evidence to date for an exomoon candidate orbiting the brown dwarf CD-35 2722 B, which itself orbits a star about 73 light-years away. The object is massive—on the order of Jupiter’s mass—and completes an orbit around the brown dwarf roughly every 170 days, with data collected via radial-velocity measurements. This triple-body arrangement, involving a star, a brown dwarf, and a massive satellite, challenges traditional Solar System-based definitions of planet and moon and has sparked a debate over appropriate nomenclature, with many researchers favoring the term exosatellite or moon depending on the counting perspective. Although the body has not been observed directly, the consistent gravitational oscillations detected by the VLT bolster the case for a genuine exomoon, marking a potential first in confirming such a satellite outside our Solar System. The brown dwarf is itself about 30 times the mass of Jupiter, and the surrounding system’s unusual architecture underscores how planetary systems can diverge from familiar patterns. Researchers emphasize that, regardless of naming, the finding expands the catalog of complex celestial configurations and guides future exomoon searches as technology and methods improve.
