GLP-1 Supplement Boom Prompts Safety Warnings
Allison Vecchio called GLP-1 drugs "a reset button on life," then faced gastrointestinal distress, brittle nails and weakness so severe she could not leave her bed. A fiber, collagen and electrolytes cocktail costing $200 to $300 a month eased the symptoms. "You really have to take the reins," she said. She has 25,000 TikTok followers and is on retainer with three brands. Some 10 million Americans used GLP-1 drugs last year; JPMorgan projects up to 25 million by 2030. US supplement sales surpassed $74 billion in 2025. Sales grew 5% in 2024 and 7% in 2025. Nearly half of GLP-1 users started new vitamins and supplements after beginning the drugs. Terri Hart began GLP-1s in 2023, called the nausea "horrible," and takes magnesium, electrolytes and B12 for about $110 a month, not covered by insurance. Hart has more than 12,000 TikTok followers and said "I establish my authority through my lived experience." Niagen Bioscience had $129 million in sales last year. TikTok Shop topped $1 billion in supplement sales in 2025. CONTESTED: Rob Fried said firms "can hire an influencer, or even hundreds of influencers on TikTok … to make whatever claims will sell." Jonathan Bonnet said "If you can't know what you're taking, it's hard to know what risks you're undergoing." Erika Craft said the drugs are "bringing in new consumers and expanding existing supplement routines." Ruth Winker said "As people get healthier, they tend to take more vitamins and supplements." Kennedy proposed tighter rules; FDA issued new dietary-ingredient guidance; a proposed GRAS pathway ban has divided industry opinion.
