India’s cybercrime watchdog ordered GitHub to take down three repositories hosting Bitchat, a Bluetooth mesh messaging app created by Jack Dorsey, citing its potential to bypass internet shutdowns and hinder lawful interception during protests in Delhi. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre invoked Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act and related IT Rules, giving GitHub three hours to disable access to the repositories. Officials warned that Bitchat’s decentralized, peer-to-peer architecture can operate without mobile networks, internet connectivity, or central servers, raising risks of coordination by anti-national elements, terrorists, and other unlawful actors during public-order situations. The move followed authorities’ use of temporary internet restrictions around the Jantar Mantar protests, where protesters reportedly relied on Bluetooth-based tools to communicate. Jack Dorsey and other supporters criticized the government’s action, arguing it targets new communication technologies. The directive underscores a broader tension between security measures and the use of decentralized tech in protest contexts.
