Kakao, Toss, Circle Explore Stablecoin Infrastructure
Kakao Group, including Kakao, KakaoPay, and KakaoBank, signed an MOU with Circle Internet Group to collaborate on blockchain-based payment infrastructure and digital asset technology, signaling Korea’s move toward a formalized digital asset ecosystem. Toss and Toss Bank also inked MOUs with Circle to explore collaboration in payment infrastructure and stablecoin technology, with potential for biometric payments and digital wallets. The partners will pursue opportunities around won-based digital assets, tokenized financial services, faster settlement, and greater interoperability with existing financial systems, in line with evolving regulatory conditions. Circle will contribute its global payment infrastructure and USDC stablecoin, while Kakao’s platform and financial services ecosystem will provide scale and integration potential across Kakao Talk, KakaoPay, and Kakao Bank. The collaboration aims to build a compliant, scalable digital asset ecosystem in Korea, testing and potentially deploying new stablecoin-based services and settlement mechanisms. Industry observers view this as a major step toward a Korean-style digital asset economy and broader adoption across Kakao’s services.
