King Charles Arrives in Guyana Amid Reparations Calls
King Charles III arrived in Guyana on Oct. 29, 2026 for a two-day state visit, second stop on a Caribbean tour after the Bahamas and before Antigua and Barbuda for CHOGM Nov. 1-4. President Irfaan Ali welcomed him at Cheddi Jagan International Airport, where Charles inspected a Guyana Defence Force Guard of Honor. The visit marks 60 years of UK-Guyana relations; he last came in February 2000 as Prince of Wales. British High Commissioner Joseph Fisher called it a moment to celebrate a modern partnership, with bilateral trade at £2.2 billion a year. A Buckingham spokesperson said Charles has a warm personal relationship with Ali going back many years. Caribbean leaders renewed calls for Britain to apologize and pay reparations for slavery. Ali told ITV that those who "benefited tremendously from the darkest days of human history" now say they lack financing, and has called an apology the next step. Hilary Beckles of the Caribbean Reparations Commission labeled the Antigua CHOGM the "reparations CHOGM," saying governments are mobilized. The British government has rejected reparations and apology demands. Reports said there were no indications the issue would shape Ali-Charles talks. The King is due to meet Indigenous, conservation, and business figures before Antigua.
