LMAX Explores Sale, IPO with Morgan Stanley, KBW
LMAX Group, a London-based institutional trading venue for crypto and foreign exchange, is evaluating strategic options including a sale or an IPO, with Morgan Stanley and KBW advising. The firm, founded in 2010 as a Betfair-Goldman Sachs joint venture, operates LMAX Digital, an institutional crypto exchange launched in 2018 that has won “Best Crypto Trading Platform” awards from 2022–2025. LMAX Digital offers spot trading in major assets like BTC, ETH, LTC, BCH, XRP, and SOL and is regulated by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission, with the group never issuing its own token. In May 2026 it added a Kiosk interface to convert crypto holdings into margin for FX and CFD trading, integrating digital assets into legacy workflows. Valuation discussions have suggested a potential up to about $5 billion, with Nasdaq listing as a preferred route, though the company remains cautious due to weak crypto markets. Private equity investor JC Flowers previously held 30% of LMAX since 2021, valuing the group at around $1 billion at that time, highlighting the scale of the platform’s growth.
