Myanmar Delivers King’s Books to Detained Suu Kyi
Myanmar's government said on October 19, 2026 that two Home Affairs officials delivered two books from King Charles III, a sealed envelope and diplomatic correspondence to detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Naypyitaw. The books were The Land Gardeners: Soil to Table by Bridget Elworthy and Henrietta Courtauld, and Soil: The World at Our Feet. Rare photographs released with a Presidential Press and Information Bureau Telegram statement show the 81-year-old in a pale green traditional blouse and skirt seated across a small table from two men in white shirts in a wood-paneled room. The encounter lasted about 10 minutes. Suu Kyi has been detained since the February 2021 coup and was moved to house arrest in April 2026 after a 2025 election installed Min Aung Hlaing as president. Her sentence, originally 33 years on charges including corruption and state secrecy violations, was reduced to 18 years remaining. Charles met her in London in 2017 when he was Prince of Wales and she was state counsellor. An ICRC representative visited in August, her first known contact with an outside independent humanitarian organization since detention; her son Kim Aris said, "This may be a first step, but it must not be the last." No foreign leader or envoy has publicly met her despite requests. The government gave no details on the correspondence or discussion. Accounts note Min Aung Hlaing is seeking to ease international isolation.
