New Zealand's Olsen-Baker named World Rugby women's player of the year
Kaipo Olsen-Baker of New Zealand was named World Rugby Women's 15s Player of the Year 2026. Elinor-Plum King, her Black Ferns teammate, was named Women's 15s Breakthrough Player of the Year 2026. The pair were surprised with the awards during live presentations after New Zealand defeated France 36-7 in Christchurch at the sixth and final round of the WXV Global Series. World Rugby chair Brett Robinson said congratulations to Kaipo and Elinor-Plum on these thoroughly deserved awards. He said Kaipo's consistency and influence have been outstanding throughout 2026, while Elinor-Plum has made a remarkable impression in her first year on the international stage. He said to see both players recognised in front of their home supporters in Christchurch makes the occasion even more special. He said their achievements reflect the exceptional talent and ambition driving women's rugby forward. Olsen-Baker, 24 and a number eight, beat Zoe Harrison and Megan Jones of England and DaLeaka Menin of Canada. King, 22 and an openside flanker, beat Pauline Barrat of France, Amelia Whitaker of Australia and Bella Vogel of the USA. Under Whitney Hansen the Black Ferns' only 2026 defeat was 26-19 to England in September; Olsen-Baker helped win the Pacific Four Series. Try of the year and team of the year announcements were due Monday. CONTESTED: No factual dispute found in the record.
