Norris Wins Hungaroring as Penalties Reshape
Lando Norris won the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring, converting pole into McLaren’s first 2026 victory as Oscar Piastri briefly led before retiring with a gearbox issue; Norris dominated after reclaiming the lead. Max Verstappen finished second, while Kimi Antonelli finished third to extend his championship lead to 50 points, with Hamilton and Russell highlighting a weekend of penalties and missteps for Ferrari and Mercedes. Piastri’s early challenge was hampered by contact with Carlos Sainz and a later gearbox failure, capping McLaren’s chance at a one-two and triggering a Virtual Safety Car that influenced strategy. Hamilton received a five-second pit-lane speeding penalty under the VSC, dropping him to fifth and widening Antonelli’s advantage; qualifying penalties also cost Hamilton a front-row start. The result comes ahead of the summer break, with Norris’s victory re-energizing McLaren’s title hopes and leaving the standings led by Antonelli as teams recalibrate for the Dutch Grand Prix.
