Reports: Pentagon Breach Exposes Nearly 3 Million Records

A Defense Manpower Data Center system at the Pentagon exposed records of 2.76 million living people and 294,000 deceased individuals after unauthorized access from October 2025 to July 2026, a U.S. defence official told ABC News. DMDC patched the vulnerability on discovery. The data included Social Security numbers and job or occupational specialty details. Officials report no evidence of misuse and are offering one year of credit monitoring and identity-protection resources. Military Times first reported the breach. DMDC holds more than 60 million personnel records. Justin Sherman of Global Cyber Strategies told CNN the information could support profiling, phishing, or foreign intelligence approaches if obtained by an adversary. Who accessed the system remains unclear. Separately, the FBI notified employees about a breach of FBIJobs.gov. ShinyHunters told The New York Times and 404 Media it would not release threatened FBI data and called the episode a marketing campaign, not extortion; ABC News has not verified that claim. Reports did not link the FBI and Pentagon incidents.
