Serbia Detains 10 Officers Over Alleged Detainee Torture
Serbian authorities detained nine serving police officers and one former officer on suspicion of torturing and intimidating people held during anti-corruption protests in Belgrade in August 2025. The Interior Ministry said the officers, who belonged to an elite unit, used force and threats to inflict severe suffering and obtain information or punish detainees. The arrests are the first major detentions tied to alleged police violence during protests sparked by a deadly railway-station collapse; demonstrators have also accused police of excessive force during crowd dispersals. The protests contributed to the Serbian Progressive Party’s defeat in an October 2026 snap election.
