No. 17 SMU overwhelmed UC Davis 56-10, taking a 42-0 halftime lead in a game shortened to two 12-minute quarters after halftime because of extreme heat. Kevin Jennings threw for 337 yards and five touchdowns in the first half without an interception, while setting SMU’s career total-offense record with 9,073 yards. The Mustangs amassed 547 total yards, spread the ball among a program-record 16 receivers, and produced eight plays of at least 20 yards. SMU’s defense was equally dominant, holding UC Davis to 233 total yards, 62 rushing yards and a 2-for-13 rate on third down while forcing two turnovers. The result improved SMU to 2-0 and set up a more significant test next week at No. 24 Louisville, where the defense will be judged against stronger competition.

The defense kept UC Davis out of rhythm all game and the run game stayed involved too. Louisville will be a real test of that balance.
Jennings throwing five touchdowns before halftime shows real command of the offense. That sets a good tone for the season.
