Zverev Defeats Shelton to Win US Open
Alexander Zverev defeated Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-2 to win the US Open and claim his second Grand Slam title of 2026, after triumphing at the French Open. The victory avenged Zverev’s loss to Dominic Thiem in the 2020 US Open final and made him only the second German man in the Open Era, after Boris Becker, to win two majors in one calendar year. Shelton, playing in his first major final, fell short of becoming the first American man in 23 years to win a Grand Slam singles title and the first Black man to win the US Open since Arthur Ashe. He reached the final after defeating Carlos Alcaraz and Frances Tiafoe, but Zverev’s stronger all-court play and decisive second-set tiebreak proved pivotal.
