Raiders Sign Michael Mayer to $45M Extension
The Las Vegas Raiders agreed to a three-year, $45 million extension with tight end Michael Mayer that includes $30 million guaranteed, making him one of the NFL’s highest-paid players at his position. Mayer, a 2023 second-round pick entering the final year of his rookie contract, is expected to start Sunday against Miami after Brock Bowers underwent meniscus surgery and is expected to miss at least the season opener. Mayer had 35 catches for 328 yards and one touchdown in 13 games last season, but the Raiders value his blocking, versatility and potential for a larger role in coach Klint Kubiak’s multiple-tight-end offense, including after Bowers returns. The extension ends a nearly four-year stretch in which Las Vegas had not extended a player on a rookie contract, highlighting the franchise’s recent front-office turnover and difficulty retaining homegrown talent.
