FIFA Opens U.S. Bids for 2030, 2034 World Cup Rights
FIFA has opened bidding for U.S. and Puerto Rico broadcast rights to the 2030 men's World Cup. Bids are due Nov. 19 and a winner is expected by year's end; bidders may also seek 2034 rights. The 2030 tournament will be hosted mainly by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with opening matches in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. Saudi Arabia will host in 2034. FIFA prefers to package English- and Spanish-language rights for one buyer but will consider joint bids, including between streaming services and traditional broadcasters. Fox and NBCUniversal's Telemundo are expected to compete alongside YouTube, Netflix, Amazon and Disney. Analysts and media executives have floated a potential price of $1.5 billion to $2 billion, though FIFA has not set a valuation. Games' time zones could affect their appeal to U.S. audiences.
