Purdue, Matt Painter Agree on Extension Through 2030-31
Purdue announced it has agreed to extend and amend men’s basketball coach Matt Painter’s contract through the 2030-31 season, pending Board of Trustees approval. The deal includes increased annual compensation and enhanced retention and performance bonuses. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported the salary will rise from $5.2 million to $7 million for 2026-27 with $50,000 annual increases thereafter; Purdue said full financial details will follow board approval. The announcement came Tuesday, hours before a UConn game. Painter, entering his 22nd season with a 501-224 record, issued a statement calling Purdue a very special place and an honor to continue as head coach at his alma mater, saying he is humbled by the administration’s faith and excited to elevate the program with class. Athletics director Tommy McClelland said that under Painter’s leadership the program has established itself as one of the nation’s premier programs through on-court success and commitment to excellence. Painter trails Gene Keady’s school record of 512 wins. He has led Purdue to 17 NCAA Tournament appearances including 11 straight, a 2023-24 Final Four and title-game loss to UConn, five Big Ten regular-season titles and three tournament titles. The team has won 117 games since 2022-23 (fourth nationally), sold out 106 straight at Mackey Arena, finished 2025-26 at 30-9 with an Elite Eight loss to Arizona, and opens 2026-27 against Gonzaga at 7:30 p.m. ET. Painter is projected as the second-highest-paid Big Ten coach behind Michigan State’s Tom Izzo.
