Ronaldo Plans Portugal Retirement After November Break
Cristiano Ronaldo has announced he will retire from Portugal's national team after the November international break. At 41, after a 2003 debut, he leaves as men's international football's record appearance-maker and scorer with 234 caps and 146 goals. In a social media video he said: "To the Portuguese people, the day has come for me to hand back the number seven shirt of our national team." He said he never felt it belonged to him alone and for 23 years had the honour and responsibility of wearing it into stadiums worldwide. Portugal won the 2016 European Championship in France and Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025 during his career. He has not announced plans to retire from club football. Right-rated coverage, including Dom Smith's London Evening Standard report, foregrounds a 30-day Portuguese FA suspension after Ronaldo stormed out of the Nations League camp in October following a fallout with manager Jorge Jesus. Those accounts say he was unused against Norway, told he would not feature against Denmark, and accused Jesus of "breaking his word" and an "absolute breach of trust." Left-rated outlets lead on the caps-and-goals record and an emotional farewell speech instead of the camp dispute.
