Sycamore Gap stump regrows three years after felling
The Sycamore Gap tree stump beside Hadrian’s Wall is showing strong regrowth three years after the landmark was illegally felled in 2023, with a ring of new shoots now about two to three feet tall. The National Trust says fencing the area, reducing soil compaction and limiting disturbance around the roots have helped the tree recover, and it is continuing to monitor the stump. The Trust has also raised saplings from seeds collected from the tree and distributed them to communities and organizations across the UK. Though the shoots offer hope, biologists estimate it could take roughly 150 years for the tree to regain its former size.
