Taiwan Blocks Grab’s $600 Million Foodpanda Deal

Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, blocked Grab's planned $600 million cash purchase of Delivery Hero's Foodpanda business in Taiwan. Three commissioners approved the block, one opposed and one abstained. The commission said potential harm to competition outweighed the deal's economic benefits. It pointed to Grab's ties to Uber, including Uber's 13.1% stake in Grab, an Uber executive's prior service on Grab's board, and voting power limited to 3.9% under Grab's dual-share structure. Grab expressed disappointment. Grab said: "Grab's core business across Southeast Asia remains robust. We will continue to focus our capital and resources on executing our growth roadmap and empowering communities across our regional footprint." Delivery Hero's statement noted deal protections including a break-fee arrangement. The deal, announced in March 2026, would have given Grab about 50% market share in Taiwan's food delivery market and expanded its presence to 21 cities. Foodpanda has operated in Taiwan for about 12 years. Delivery Hero retains the right to appeal.
