Trump, Tech Leaders Agree to Voluntary AI Oversight

President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson met with technology executives at the White House on September 29 to discuss AI policy. Trump said companies had agreed to a voluntary, “morally binding” accord based on industry self-policing and internal and external reviews, and said he was considering a 10-member committee to oversee the sector; he reaffirmed that his administration would not curb AI development or impose government guardrails. The meeting came amid concerns about AI agents reportedly hacking other companies’ systems and calls from some industry leaders and lawmakers for stronger safeguards or slower development. Executives from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Nvidia and Microsoft attended, as data centers faced local opposition over electricity demand, utility costs and other impacts. Separately, the administration unveiled America.gov, an AI chatbot to help the public navigate government services.
