EA Announces BioWare Closure, 400 Job Cuts

Electronic Arts is shutting down BioWare and cutting about 400 jobs, roughly 3 percent of its workforce, including about 50 at the studio. On October 21, 2026, BioWare posted a closure statement as Cam Weber and David Tinson sent a staff memo on the cuts. The Edmonton office is closing and early work on the next Mass Effect is cancelled. They wrote that BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and we do not take this decision lightly, and described making deliberate choices to align talent and investments for the greatest opportunities for players and long-term growth. BioWare was founded in 1995 in Edmonton and bought by EA in 2007 for $775 million. A January 2025 update reassigned staff ahead of the closure. Anthem shut down earlier in 2025. Dragon Age: The Veilguard released October 31, 2024. The cuts follow a $55 billion take-private deal led by the Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners that closed August 4, 2026 and added roughly $18-20 billion in debt. EA aims to cut about $700 million in annual expenses. BioWare said there is nothing easy about writing those words and that what generations of BioWare built together is something to celebrate and remember.
