Tyler Adams Reclaims USMNT Captaincy for 2030 Cycle
Mauricio Pochettino named Tyler Adams USMNT captain on Oct. 2, 2026, roughly 16 hours before USA-Mexico at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Adams, a 27-year-old Bournemouth midfielder with 60 caps and two goals, returns to the role he held at the 2022 World Cup as the youngest captain at 23 years, 288 days. The move follows Tim Ream's international retirement; Ream finished with 86 caps and captained Pochettino's side 23 times. Pochettino, whose contract runs through 2030, informed players at Thursday's training and announced the choice Friday. Adams captained the win over Peru earlier in the window; Antonee Robinson captained the win over Chile. Pochettino said Adams is "the player and the person that can lead the period that we have ahead" and "a perfect role model for everyone in the way he can translate the philosophy and the culture and represent the amazing country." Adams said he is "extremely honored and grateful for the opportunity" and that "Getting the armband doesn't mean anything to me in being a leader or different in who I am," as he aims to build a winning culture. The U.S. plays Mexico on Oct. 3, then Canada.
