HeelFaceClips posted a YouTube video titled "When The Undertaker Knocked Out Stone Cold at SummerSlam 1998"
The video turns on a WWF Championship match from SummerSlam on August 30, 1998. The card was billed Highway to Hell and took place at Madison Square Garden in New York. Steve Austin defended the title against The Undertaker. Earl Hebner served as referee.
William Windsor reported on June 21, 2016, that Austin described the night on his podcast The Steve Austin Show. Austin said he had never been knocked out before. He hit the ropes. Undertaker went for a backdrop. Austin kicked him in the chest. Undertaker straightened up to no-sell it. The back of Undertaker's head struck Austin under the chin. "And, boom! Knockout blow. He flashed me. I went down on the mat. I was knocked out. I was only knocked out [for] maybe two [or] three seconds."
Austin told the podcast he came to on his back and did not know where he was. Hebner looked down with a little grin and asked if he was alright. Austin asked where he was. Hebner told him he was in the Garden. They continued. Austin said one of his biggest disappointments was that the knockout cut short what had been building into a strong match. From that point he remembered little except lying on the table and Undertaker climbing for the leg drop.
Matty Paddock wrote for talkSPORT on November 26, 2024, that Undertaker recounted the same collision on his podcast Six Feet Under. "His eyes rolled back like a slot machine. I was like: 'Uh oh!'" Undertaker said he had given Austin a backup plan before the bell. "I told Steve: 'If anything goes wrong in this match, I'm gonna put you on the table and I'm gonna climb up to the top [rope] and I'm gonna drop the leg on to you from the table.'" He put Austin on the Spanish announce table. Undertaker had never gone to the top rope for that spot. He looked at the distance and figured he could manage it. Once he got up there he thought it would hurt. "I knew I had to protect him. I can't hurt him." He cracked his coccyx on the landing. Austin was fine.
WWE's match summary states Undertaker delivered the top-rope leg drop through the table after the accidental knockout. Both men were later downed on a missed charge into the corner. Undertaker went for Old School. Austin answered with a low blow and a Stunner to retain the championship. Liam McMillen's March 26, 2025, piece noted Undertaker also discussed the night on Hot Ones and said any chance to work with Austin made for a good night.
