VW-Xpeng EV averages 267 monthly sales in China
Volkswagen’s ID. UNYX 08, its first electric SUV with Xpeng, averaged 267 monthly sales in China from April through August against an internal target of 3,622. About 1,300 units sold at roughly $34,260, while Xiaomi’s YU7 moved about 57,000 and Zeekr’s 7X more than 21,000. China’s share of group profits fell from nearly 50% to about 10%. Volkswagen turned to Xpeng in 2023 and sold the model mainly through Anhui’s 166 outlets rather than its 3,000-plus FAW and SAIC dealerships. It cut 2027 plans from about 70,400–74,000 to about 64,000. The UNYX 09 sedan is due in showrooms this month. On September 10 Ralf Brandstätter warned staff of an extraordinary market contraction. Analysts offered separate readings. Pedro Pacheco said Chinese customers ask why buy an expensive German car if they can get the technology much cheaper. Stephen Reitman said after April 2024 renderings of Xpeng-linked models, the next day at the Beijing auto show you could basically see this kind of design already on the market. Stefan Bratzel said Volkswagen was too slow in building the competence they need today.
