Nepal rescuers free second tunnel worker as hundreds remain missing

Nepal’s flood death toll has risen to 1,344, with 4,898 people still missing and more than 13,000 rescued after an Aug. 26 ice-and-rock avalanche triggered catastrophic flooding across northern and central districts. Rescue teams pulled a Chinese hydropower worker from a 225-meter tunnel and rescued a Nepali woman from a collapsed home, following the recovery of two workers from the Trishuli 3A hydropower project the previous day. Authorities and international teams from India, China, South Korea, Australia and the United States continue searching damaged hydropower facilities, where hundreds of workers may remain trapped. The disaster has displaced thousands, destroyed infrastructure and created public-health risks, including E. coli contamination in several drinking-water sources. Survivors have joined relief and rescue efforts as officials identify victims and work to restore essential services.
