Anak Krakatau Eruption Disrupts 209 Flights
Mount Anak Krakatau’s eruption has spread volcanic ash across western Indonesia, prompting the closure of eight airports, including Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta and Halim Perdanakusuma airports. Indonesia’s Transport Ministry said more than 270,000 passengers and over 2,000 flights had been affected from Sept. 5 through cancellations, delays and diversions, with ash reaching Jakarta, West Java, Lampung and South Sumatra. Regional disruption included canceled Jakarta services by Malaysian airports, Taiwan’s China Airlines and EVA Air, and Royal Brunei Airlines. Further eruptions remained possible as the volcano stayed at alert Level III amid continued seismic activity. Authorities monitored ash movement, arranged alternative airports and advised residents to stay indoors, while schools in some areas shifted to remote learning.
