37 Suspected Miners Die in Niger State Custody After Raids

Thirty-seven suspected illegal miners died in custody after being arrested during September 15–16 raids in Minna, Niger State, Nigeria, with earlier reports citing 33 victims. Authorities initially suggested a disease outbreak, but the cause remains unconfirmed as forensic examinations, autopsies and medical tests investigate possible overcrowding, inadequate ventilation, suffocation or exposure to hazardous substances. Survivors and relatives alleged that roughly 65–67 detainees were packed into a poorly ventilated cell, guards ignored pleas for air and water, and some detainees drank urine. Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and federal and state authorities launched investigations into the deaths and detention conditions, while the Niger State NSCDC commandant was suspended pending a full inquiry. Protests demanding justice erupted in Minna, and Governor Mohammed Bago declared mourning, called for accountability and urged safer, regulated mining practices.
