Man Killed in Sorrento Shark Attack

A man in his 60s was killed by a shark while swimming at Sorrento Beach, north of Perth, Western Australia, on Friday morning. Witnesses reported seeing the shark drag him offshore and described a large pool of blood, while his swimming companion reached shore. The shark species has not been confirmed, although a great white measuring more than 16 feet was reportedly seen nearby later that day. Police, boats, helicopters and emergency crews searched the area, but the victim was not publicly identified and it was unclear whether remains were recovered. Authorities closed the beach and extended restrictions along about 12 kilometers of coastline. The incident followed a separate attack near Geraldton that seriously injured a surfer and was Australia’s fifth fatal shark attack of the year, above the long-term annual average of two to three.
