Louisiana Man Arrested After Dog Dies in Machete Attack

Kevin Renard Lightell, 29, of Bayou L'Ourse was arrested Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, after the Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic disturbance. A woman told deputies she woke to find Lightell standing over her with a machete. She said he tried to strike her as she fled the bedroom. Lightell then allegedly attacked her dog with the machete. Deputies detained him on arrival and found the dog with severe injuries. The dog died Sunday evening, Oct. 18, 2026. Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon said deputies arrested Lightell following the incident. Lightell was booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals, domestic abuse aggravated assault and simple escape. He remained in custody pending a bond hearing. Rated outlets reported the same sheriff's office account of the woman's statement, the detention, and the dog's death. The next step is the pending bond hearing.
