Guatemalan Smuggler Sentenced 30 Years After 53 Deaths
Rigoberto Ramon Miranda-Orozco was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to helping organize a human-smuggling operation tied to the 2022 Quintana Road tragedy. Prosecutors said he recruited migrants and helped arrange the journeys of two people who died and one who survived. Miranda-Orozco was arrested in Guatemala in 2024 and extradited to the United States in March 2025. No contested claims were found in available reporting on the sentence or his role. On June 27, 2022, 64 migrants were packed into a tractor-trailer traveling from Laredo to San Antonio in extreme heat without working air conditioning. Fifty-three of them died; 11 survived.
