Swiss Panel Rules Israeli Bobsled Commentary Discriminatory
A nine-member Swiss broadcasting complaints panel voted 5-4 on Oct. 30, 2026, to uphold four complaints against RTS commentator Stefan Renna. On Feb. 16, 2026, during the men's two-man bobsleigh second run at the Milan-Cortina Olympics, Renna spent nearly two minutes live on Edelman's Gaza war views. Renna called Edelman "a Zionist to the core," said he posted messages "supporting the genocide in Gaza," noted the UN Commission of Inquiry's use of that term, and cited Edelman calling the intervention "the most just and moral war in history." Renna said the presence "raises questions" about eligibility for athletes who support war. The Israeli team finished last of 26. RTS removed the clip after it circulated online. The ICA majority held the prepared commentary suggested excluding Edelman over political views, stigmatizing him versus the other 25 competitors and breaching the discrimination ban. Edelman called the remarks a "diatribe" and gave them no credence. Israel's embassy in Switzerland said it was "deeply appalled by the blatant abuse" and demanded an apology. Complainants were unnamed. Written reasoning and measures come later; appeals go to the Federal Supreme Court.
