World Drowning Prevention Day prompts YMCA safety efforts
Across North America, YMCAs and partner organizations highlighted World Drowning Prevention Day with events and programs emphasizing water safety, supervision, and lifesaving skills. In Norfolk, Virginia, the YMCA hosted talks and pool activities where decorated rubber ducks symbolized learning to stay safe around water, and a local nonprofit highlighted aqua-safety education. The Mississippi Gulf Coast YMCA organized a life jacket drive and offered free swim lessons to broaden access to safe water activities and reduce drowning risks. In Winkler, Canada, Swim Smart used games and demonstrations to teach families about life jackets, hazards, and staying within reach, with a focus on rural communities. The Nashville area introduced Angel Eye, a drowning-detection system installed across its 12 indoor facilities to augment lifeguard response without replacing human coverage. Together, these efforts stress ongoing supervision, access to flotation devices, and technology as complementary tools to lower drownings in high-risk areas.
