Washington United Terminals (WUT) in Tacoma, a West Coast terminal operated by HMM, has awarded HD Hyundai Samho a turnkey contract to supply four cranes, replacing two aging quay cranes and adding two new yard cranes as part of a modernization drive. The project aims to boost WUT’s capacity from 590,000 TEU to 880,000 TEU and enable the handling of larger container ships, with delivery scheduled by 2028. WUT currently operates eight quay cranes and six yard cranes, and the upgrade will enhance reliability and throughput as part of HMM’s broader investments in port infrastructure and logistics stability. The cranes will be manufactured, transported, installed, and commissioned by HD Hyundai Samho, using high-quality POSCO steel, and reflect a broader Korean-led push in MASGA and regional shipbuilding collaborations. This initiative complements HMM’s ongoing expansion efforts at other global hubs, including the Vadhvan Port project in India and the TTIA expansion in Algeciras, Spain, underscoring a strategic push to diversify and strengthen international port-linked capabilities.
