Health Insurer Claims AI Can Save Customers $200 Million Over Three Years

Cigna Healthcare announced Thursday that it is “significantly expanding” its personalized medical care management programs via artificial intelligence-driven tools in an effort to save customers money.

The AI-driven programs aim to “help identify customers who would benefit from earlier support and connect them with clinicians,” according to Cigna’s announcement. This expansion is expected to support 20% more customers who have “emerging, complex or chronic” health conditions, per the news release.

Cigna projects that the move will lower medical costs for its engaged customers by $2,000 annually on average. The health company also expects that the effort will result in an estimated $200 million in total savings for its customers over the next three years.

“As costs for hospital care, emergency services, and prescription drugs continue to rise, we are investing in tools and clinical programs that help customers avoid unnecessary hospitalizations, better manage chronic conditions, and reduce the likelihood of more serious and expensive health events later,” Cigna Healthcare U.S. President Bryan Holgerson said in a statement.

“By combining predictive analytics, AI-enabled capabilities, and clinical expertise, we can identify health needs earlier and connect more customers with personalized support when it has the greatest impact,” Holgerson added.

Cigna Healthcare did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Cigna’s AI-enabled capabilities seek to help “identify opportunities to provide support earlier, personalize engagement, and connect more customers with experienced clinicians,” per the announcement.

Thursday’s announcement comes as many health companies across the globe have been adopting AI tools over the years. Though, some analysts previously told the DCNF that AI may cause U.S. healthcare costs to rise over the next year.
