23andMe to Pay California $6 Million to End Breach and Data-Transfer Claims
23andMe’s holding company agreed to pay California $6 million to resolve claims that the company failed to protect customers’ genetic and personal information in a 2023 breach affecting nearly 7 million people. Pending bankruptcy-court approval, the settlement preserves customers’ rights to delete their data and destroy their samples, and California will drop its appeal over the transfer of the data in the company’s bankruptcy sale.
