A 44-year-old Topeka social worker, Sarah J. McLaughlin-Olson, was killed while helping crash victims on U.S. Route 75 south of Topeka on Sept. 10, after a Ford F-350 pulling a horse trailer veered onto the shoulder to avoid other vehicles. The Honda Civic driver was seriously injured and McLaughlin-Olson’s death drew statements from her school community about her dedication and support for students and families.

Topeka City Manager Perez Resigns, Interim Named
Topeka City Manager Robert Perez resigned effective immediately, and Mayor Spencer Duncan said the departure involved no wrongdoing. Deputy City Manager Braxton Copley and then Michael Webb will serve as interim leaders while the city searches for a permanent replacement; city services are expected to continue without interruption.
